Genelia talks reviews about her ‘first experience’

Genelia D’Souza is confident of success of her forthcoming release, Katha that is releasing this weekend (Dec 12). Speaking about the film, she said she has never met a girl like Chaitra that she played in the movie.

“Hers is unique character and playing the role was tough,” she said. She also raved producer Gunnam Gangaraju for their professional attitude towards filmmaking. “For the first time in my 7 years career in Tollywood, I was given a bounded script before the release. Never did I was offered bounded script here, so it was unique and first such experience,” she informed.

Chit Chat with Ram

Devadas, Jagadam and Ready, two out of three having achieved tremendous success, the hero of all these films, Ram, is sitting pretty much a threat to the established ones and is expected to give a run for their money. Post, the successful ‘Ready’ MS Raju signed him for ‘Maska’ which after careful carving by B Gopal is scheduled to get released on January 14, a Sankranthi release. In this happy occasion Ram had a chat and some excerpts are

You are acting in a film called Maska. But do you practice Maska?

Yes! (heartily laughs) Whatever the short comings I had in applying ‘Maska’ in the beginning of the shooting, I got them corrected and became a ‘Master of Maska’ by the time the shooting ended. I now apply Maska to everybody.

What is the significance of Maska? Why the story wanted it?

Well! This is ‘Maska’ from your side. (laughs) Don’t expect me to fall for it. Story has to be understood by watching the film.

You have worked with many top heroines. Is there anyone who you find impressive off screen?

Sorry, I’m not game for such off screen business.

Do you feel that it will be yet another Bobbili Raja as the director claims?

Yes! I remember my elders saying that I was fascinated by the song ‘Balapampatti’ and I was just three years old when Bobbili Raja was released. It had such an impact on the people, particularly children. Similarly we all expect this movie also to create an impression and the word ‘Maska’ is another attraction.

What do you feel about heroines?

The movie needed two heroines and hence we selected Hansika and Sheela. Initially we had some apprehensions about Sheela. But later she did extremely well in the short time she had to perform. Hansika’s acting need not be described as she has already proved and also has a lengthy role to do in this film.

Can you say something about your experience with the director B Gopal?

Fortunately I’ve an extra experience on film-making due to my constant association with our home productions. Thus I know the director’s positive and negative points. In the case of B Gopal I understood his abilities to do mass as well as youth kind of movies. He is a gem of a person with very good understanding.

What is you association with producer MS Raju?

My association with MS Raju goes a long way. Infact, his son Sumanth and I are treated equally. He had shown keen interest in producing my first film which got stalled due to other projects. Now with success of Ready he had taken firm action to do a movie quickly with me as a lead hero. And you are seeing ‘Maska’ now.

Have you created a niche for you with success in Ready?

See, I’ve given my best in Maska as I did in Ready and infact have learnt a bit of betterment and applied here. I will not disappoint the audience if there is any special expectation from me.

Can you tell us about your further programme?

Director Saravanan is keeping me busy for a project under my home productions. As of now further projects have not yet been firmed up.

Interview with Kamal Kamaraju

Background:
I am born in Gandhi Asramam, Sevagram, Maharashtra. I am brought up in Hyderabad. I did my schooling in LFHS and degree in Architecture at JNTC.

Entering films:
It was Aithe film that motivated me to get into films. I was awestruck with the narrative technique in that film and I became an instant fan of Chandra Sekhar Yeleti. Hanumantha Rao who works for Chandra Sekhar is a good friend of me. I met Chandra Sekhar Yeleti through Hanumantha Rao and expressed my willingness to join him. I got a call from Yeleti’s office when I went to Delhi to do practicals of Architecture. I got an offer to work in art department. Chandra Sekhar Yeleti was supposed to do a film with Uday Kiran as hero. I joined as an assistant under art director Ravinder. But that film did not take off. I worked for AOR (Anukokunda Oka Roju) film in the art department. The same team worked for Rajamouli’s Chatrapati. I acted as one of the 4 guys who follow hero Prabhas all the time in that film.

That is when I came to know that Sekhar Kammula was planning to direct a film titled Godavari. Aithe and Anand are two trendsetting films in Telugu film industry in my opinion. I went to their office in Padmarao Nagar met the co-director Praveena. I got a call from Rajahmundry when they were just about to start the shoot. I got an important character in that film.

That is when I met Anish Kuruvilla. During the time of Happy Days, Anish Kuruvilla came up with the idea of ‘Confessions of a Filmmaker’. We did that film during that time. After the super success of Happy Days, Sekhar Kammula wanted to introduce Anish as a feature film director. That is how Avakai Biryani happened. I feel lucky to have got the role of main lead in this film.

Tell us about the name of your character and specialty of it?
I can’t reveal the name of my character in this film. Avakai Biryani is about a 7-seater auto driver who has goals and ambitions. He also wants to pursue studies while working as auto driver. He is not the kind of guy who accepts defeat. He falls in love with a pickle selling girl who is also strong and ambitious.

What is Avakai Biryani?
There is always a story to the passengers who travel in an auto. But nobody has shown it from the angle of an auto driver. Avakai Biryani captures the human side of an auto driver and a pickle seller. If Happy Days is about romanticizing college life, Avakai Biryani is about romanticizing village life.

Did you do any research on auto drivers?
Yes. I observed the 7-seater auto drivers both in Hyderabad city and the villages surrounding Hyderabad. The 7-seater auto drivers in Hyderabad are very practical and they just bother about money. The 7-seater auto drivers in village are more courteous with people and they tend to have bonding with the passengers.

Any precautions for this character?
Anish wanted me to appear lean. Hence I had to shed 8 kgs of weight. I am doing the role of a guy who works hard and it should show in my appearance. And I could relate personally with the characteristic of auto driver.

Tell us about Anish Kuruvilla as a director?
Anish Kuruvilla strikes balance between art and commerce. He is also very good with actors. He narrated the film naturally without missing entertainment.

Bindu Madhavi mentioned that you are a serious actor? What is so serious about you?
I am not a guy who jokes around the set. Sekhar Kammula and Anish Kuruvilla have given me the biggest opportunity of my lifetime by making me hero in this film. I should not let them down. Hence I tried my best to be 100% dedicated to what I am doing.

Tell us about your co-actor Bindu Madhavi?
Bindu Madhavi has a tremendous potential in her as an actress. She will give Bombay-based heroines a run for their money in the future. She is an ambitious girl and she will become a big mainstream actress.

What is your gut feeling on the final product of Avakai Biryani?
It will become a classic masterpiece in Telugu that transcends all the classes.

How are you planning to mold your career?
I want to create a brand name and trust for myself that the movie should be good if Kamal Kamaraju acts in it.

Who are your favorite directors?
Rishikesh Mukherjee and Akira Kurosawa are my all time favorite directors. Asutosh Gowarikar, Dibakar Benerjee (Khosla ka Ghosla), Chandra Sekhar Yeleti, Sekhar Kammula and Anish Kuruvilla are my favorite directors among the new generation.

Who are your favorite actors?
Amitab Bachchan and Dileep Kumar from the old Hindi films. I admire Kamal Hassan and Ameer Khan for their perfectionism and the way they brought revolution in Indian films. Naseeruddin Shah is an idol for me and I remember him whenever I find a tough acting job. In Telugu, I am a huge fan of Chiranjeevi. I grew up watching his films. Chiranjeevi is the one who brought style to Telugu films.

What are your next projects?
I have five scripts with me and two of them are really nice. I will take a call on them if I could get the right people doing it.

what kamal Hasan says about Dasavatharam

Exclusive interview of Dr.Kamal Hassan with behind scenes footage from the movie. The confidence in him speaks out! Sure to rock and roll the Kollywood and Tollywood

chit chat with ready boy ram

Ram, who had struck gold in his career with his very debut film Devdas, consolidated his position as a highly explosive and potential mass hero with Jagadam. He always prefers to be aloof from the hype and media blare, but he found some time to give an exclusive interview to Totaltollywood.com. This coincides with the Birthday of Ram, coming up tomorrow (May 15). His latest film Ready – with tagline running Dhenikaina, is finished to its shoot, barring the last leg formalities, and gets ready for Release probably in the second week of June. He speaks about his director Srinu Vaitla, Genelia, Peter Haynes and what not. His urge for versatility is seen in his sharp and hunting eyes. It is four years now since Ram entered the Tollywood, yet giving only two films. He doesn\'t believe in Number Game, but ardently trusts in hard work and creativity.

You clinched the deal as a debut hero in Devadas. Again, you proved your mettle as a mass hero with high energy levels. But, you are taking to the lighter-vein subject with Ready. Don\'t you think, you might be at a loss with less scope for you to perform amidst a plethora of artistes?

It\'s a good commercial perception. I knew my limitations. After all, I am two-movies old. I am happy the audiences accepted my presence in the industry. When I did Devadas, it was all like rapid fire and curiosity with my inner levels. When I did Jagadam, I could take on some matured levels and understood the dynamics of a hero\'s characterization. I further studied the possibility of a hero\'s growth – from the point of view of the audiences. Ready is certainly my choice for my audiences. Srinu Vaitla watched Devadas and got convinced with my strengths for an out and out comedy entertainer without spilling off the commercial elements. For this kind of film, you need to have multiple objects. In fact, I enjoy working with a good number of artistes in this film. You will sure find the Srinu Vaitla mark entertainment. I am thrilled in one aspect. My burden as hero in Ready when compared to my previous films Devdas and Jagadam is very less. This gave me a good opportunity to work in a lighter-vein film, away from serious subject for the time being.

Is Ready an extension of Dhee?

It is not an extension of Dhee. In fact, Vishnu did a good job and proved his stamina in Dhee. I can only say, my film Ready might have a close ride alongside Dhee, but its script, characterization and other aspects have altogether new dimensions. Change is the principle of success in the entertainment industry, particularly. Of course, some similarities are there. Brahmanandam is going to rock from the start to finish. I can\'t say more than that. To cut the ice, it\'s a rocking family entertainer.

In family entertainer, we can\'t expect much masala elements like stunts?

Nothing of the sort. You have superb stunts. Peter Haynes took an oath. I quote him here… If I don\'t get a good name as a stuntman with this film, I will surely leave the industry. That is the confidence level. There are two exclusive getups of mine for this department of action. You will watch it.

What about songs?

This is my second film with Devi Sri Prasad (after Jagadam) To be frank, I don\'t believe in dancing for all the songs. There are certain levels. Romantic, frolic and offbeat. There is no need to rip the screen with dances. But, I am sure; all the numbers will be entertaining. There are six songs with a judicious mix of mass beats and melody.

How you felt working with Srinu Vaitla?

He is a very flexible technician. He understands the stamina of an artiste and would leave no stone unturned to get the best out of him. Moreover, he is a master of his own script. I observed one thing. Hero\'s personal character and a director\'s imagination and creativity will play the magic. But both have to match with each other and should be equally good. This well suits our combination.

How about Genelia?

Yes. She is a much disciplined artiste and a topmost heroine here. I heard that some heroines do perturb the producers and directors with their pranks and non-cooperation. But, there is never such a problem with her. As this film Ready is made on our home banner, I personally observed that the entire unit is all in praise for her.

Ready is produced by your home production banner. How is it working in your home production banner?

It is a great feeling. In fact, my respect for my uncle (Ravikishore) went to further levels. The kind of respect he demands from the unit he works with is apparent. His knowledge, dedication and involvement is amazing. He spares no expense to get what is needed. Every one in the unit feels like working on a home project. It is a great feeling.

Did you take any remuneration for this film?

Highly confidential...... (laughs)

Now, tell us about your forthcoming project with B. Gopal and MS Raju. We hear that it makes an odd combination?

MS Raju knew me ever since I was a thirteen year old boy. He had even asked me to a do a film, which got released recently. But, I was engaged with Jagadam. Coming to the present script, Raju is very confident. He says that it is the script which he found to be very powerful after Okkadu. The same was also narrated to uncle (pedananna Sravanti Ravi Kishore). That time I was sitting on the script of Ready. In the meantime, the script (of MS Raju-B. Gopal film) was developed further and worked to perfection. I too am amazed with it. Both of them are very responsible and sensitive technicians. Charki is in mind for the music and Hansika is the heroine.

What about Rey ? It should have come earlier?

Of course. YVS Chowdary was busy with his US trips and working on the script. Moreover, it is a big budget film. By the time everything gets finalized, it would be somewhere around September. So, uncle thought it right to do a film before that. That is B. Gopal film, which is likely to release in October. The shoot is commencing from May 21st, tentatively. And we are planning to start shoot of Rey in September and release it as Sankranti gift 2009.

What kind of films do you watch? How do you update yourself with regard to the flashing trends?

I hardly watch movies. When I was in Chennai, I used to watch some Tamil films and mostly English films, apart from the movies of our banner. Coming to updating myself, its quite easy. The TV media will not give you any rest. Even if you want to be an ignorant, it doesn\'t leave you. Simply, you are forced to remain updated. Its good.

How do you find your journey in Tollywood?

I entered in April 2004. Now, its four years. It\'s very Loooooooooooong. I know that I did just two films. Hereafter, I wish to speed up my career, but not in a hurry.

In Bollywood or Tollywood, everybody is talking about six packs and eight packs? What about your option?

Simply, I am not interested. It\'s a separate taste for some people. I don\'t think I will develop interest in that in future also. In case, the story demands any such figure, I might try, but not certain.

You are seen on the sets regularly, though you don\'t really have the schedules. Why? Do you give any suggestions?

I wish to have a thorough idea of the filmmaking. It is a kind of curiosity. When I watch a scene, which I have to follow up later, it will sure give me an idea of the emotions. The action-reaction principle will work out, I believe so. It will also enhance the creative levels. Coming to suggestions, I frankly do it when I feel it so. Whether the director or any technician follows it or not, I am least bothered. But, it is not my nature to poke my nose in areas which is not under my purview.

It was criticized that you imitated Pawan Kalyan in Devadas, but retained your originality in Jagadam. Do you keep changing your style film after film?

I tell you this. I like to be very flexible in my celluloid career. Some people might call it versatility. I would be lucky if I could master it. It all depends on the blessings and acceptance of the audiences, who are the ultimate judges.

What is your personal view of a Cinema?

A cinema is one which doesn\'t have any particular categorization. Generally, movies deal with subjects related to personal failures, achievements and the like. You can do a film with just One crore rupees. The same could be done in hundred crores or thousand crores. I believe in limitless creativity. At the same time, I vote for entertainment factor and is not really bothered about the message segment.

These days, films are directly impacting the youth; say it with elements like elopement, violence and other mal-content. Don\'t you think your film Jagadam belonged to that streak with its message in favor of violence?

There is a saying that the bad spreads faster than the good. When the hero in Jagadam is shown as the perpetrator and believer of violence that is the beginning of the realization. Naturally, you know the climax. Good always is the winner.

Do you have any plans to do versatile and experimental roles?

Yes. I believe Jagadam too comes under that genre, thanks to its dark shades. Moreover, such roles require more maturity and understanding of the profession. I am confident. I will surely do such roles.

Ok. What are the highlights in Ready? Any item songs?

We took a lot of pains shooting the film, yet we enjoyed it absolutely. You have a song sequence shot near Medak with 400 junior artistes. There is another scene where we used nearly 50 vehicles. It is a lavish entertainer which is hitting with a Rs. 13 crore budget. You don\'t have any item songs, as the script doesn\'t demand such element. Senior cinematographer Prasad worked for the project. You have the locations shot in Swiss. A lot more things will entertain you.Thank you, Ram. We wish Ram a very happy birthday and success in all his future endeavours. We thank him for this exclusive time.

Genelia says love is life

She’s the chirpy extrovert who just can’t stop talking nineteen to the dozen in the recent hit Santhosh Subramaniam. Actress Genelia who played the garrulous Hasini in the film seems as bubbly and active in real life too. “There is some amount of madness in everyone. If we are always serious in life, there’s no charm in it,” is her take. Success tastes sweet...

So how does it feel to taste success in Tamil? “It feels awesome. I was wondering whether I would be able to pull off the role for the second time since I acted in the original Telugu version Bommarillu as well. But I am glad with the results,” she says. “Only someone with true passion for this script could have done this remake and Raja and Ravi have that dedication. I admire them for that.”

Genelia became a known face with Boys in Tamil after which Sachin and Chennai Kadhal followed but didn't do much for her career. We quiz her about this and she says, “I never got any negative feedback about my acting or the way I was presented. So that gives me a motivation to continue as a responsible artiste.”

She is all praise for director M Raja and editor Mohan who did not consider her unlucky and had no doubts that she would do justice to the role. “It’s good to see filmmakers like them who believe in taking responsibility for their work and do not blame the heroines if a film flops.”

Busy bee...
Genelia is busy with three Hindi films, including Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na starring Aamir Khan's nephew Imran Khan and Priyadarshan's Mere Baap Pehle Aap. She also has one Telugu and one Kannada film on hand. With so much going for her, is she game for Tamil cinema? Says she,“Of course, I want to do Tamil films. I want to do scripts that suit me.” Glamour is okay with Genelia as long as it is not vulgar. “I am not looking at heroine oriented roles. As long as I have an important presence in the film, even for five minutes, it’s ok,” she shrugs.

So what is her take on love? Does she have someone special in her life right now? “Love is life!” she smiles. “We love our parents, family and friends. But I have no one special in my life right now. I am single and enjoying it very much!” she grins.

And how can she best be described?
“I am a very positive person. Failure is the reason to prove myself. It keeps me on the move,” she concludes.

katrina kaif interview: no marriage

So you have finally become one of Bollywood's highest paid actors by bagging a 6 crore deal with Studio 18?

I'm happy that my talent is being recognized. I can't talk about it right now, but yes the figures are close to it.

6 Crore for one film, that's quite a lot of money?

No, no, it's not for one film, but for two films. I'm not in a position to discuss any further on this.

So finally you are out of Salman's shadow?

Now this is weird. Where did it come from (looking irritated)?

You really think you deserve that much money?

Why not? I ended last year with 4 big hits, Namaste London, Apne, Partner and Welcome. And the 4 films made money. So career wise, it's been an extremely fulfilling year for me.

And personally?

Doing well as well. I have taken care of my family and they are happy for me.

What about marriage?

You guys will have to wait for that. I have just started my career and can't afford to give up everything. My first priority is to provide financial security to my family. I have to make them financially secure before marrying someone.

What about the recent news that Salman slapped you?

That's really ridiculous. It was some dirty person's figment of imagination. I have never really discussed my personal life, but enough is enough. I have always believed what personal is personal. But this is too much. The story that has appeared is utter rubbish and fabricated. I suspect that it's been spread by vested interest with ulterior motives. I would like to repeat that nothing of this sort has happened. Normally I don't like to clarify but sometimes one has to take a stand.

Your next release is Race. Heard that you have done some bold scenes?

It's an action thriller. I had lots of fun shooting for the film. Race is extremely slick and has got an international look. It was so special shooting for Race. I am just looking forward to it.

What's on the pipeline?

Race, Singh Is Kingg, Main Yuvraj, and two untitled films with Yashraj films.
